Starting strong tomato plants from seed
Successful tomato seedlings need the right balance of warmth, bright light, moisture and gradual acclimatisation.
Work backwards from planting-out conditions
Tomatoes are sensitive to frost. Before sowing, estimate when conditions in your garden are reliably warm enough for planting out, and consider whether the plants will grow under glass or outdoors. Starting too early can leave large seedlings struggling on a dark windowsill for weeks. Germination may need warmth, but after emergence the most common problem is insufficient light combined with excessive room heat.
Sow cleanly and water gently
Use clean containers with drainage and a suitable seed-starting mix. Follow the packet for depth and spacing, then moisten evenly without leaving the tray standing in water. Keep a label with the variety and sowing date. Once seedlings emerge, provide ample light and avoid constantly wet compost. Air movement and clean conditions help reduce problems, but do not expose tiny seedlings to a cold draught.
Pot on at the appropriate stage
When seedlings are large enough to handle without crushing the stem, transplant them carefully into individual pots. Hold seedlings by a leaf rather than squeezing the delicate stem. Provide appropriate growing medium and water the roots thoroughly after potting. Check the root system and increase pot size when necessary, but do not move a small plant into an unnecessarily enormous wet container where moisture is difficult to manage.
Harden off before moving outdoors
An indoor tomato plant is not automatically ready for wind, strong sunlight or cold nights. Introduce the plants to sheltered outdoor conditions gradually over several days, bringing them back under cover when temperatures drop. Check the final location for space, soil warmth, support and watering access. Planting out is a weather and plant-development decision, not simply the date printed in a generic calendar.
Before you begin: three practical checks
- Match sowing time to local frost risk
- Give emerging seedlings plenty of light
- Harden off gradually before planting out
