PRACTICAL GARDEN GUIDE

Plan next season’s vegetable beds

A practical bed plan begins with the light and space you actually have and the harvest you realistically want to use.

Draw the existing space first

Measure each bed and mark fixed paths, water access points, fences and permanent planting. Note where direct sunlight arrives at different times of day. A position that is bright in the morning may be shaded later, and a leafless tree changes the light pattern between spring and summer.

Start with the long-season crops

Place the crops that occupy a bed for a long period before filling gaps with quick-growing vegetables. Check mature plant dimensions and seed-packet spacing, not only the size of a young seedling. Leave room for watering, weeding and harvest without repeatedly stepping onto the growing soil.

Record what grew where

Write down the crop families previously grown in each bed. This is useful when planning rotations and identifying recurring problems, although a simple rotation chart cannot by itself solve every soil or pest issue. Use your own observations alongside general recommendations.

Spread sowing and harvest dates

Do not sow every row of salad or radish at once unless you can use the resulting harvest. A series of smaller sowings often provides a steadier supply. Reserve some unassigned space for unexpected losses, later transplants or a follow-on crop once an early harvest is complete.

Keep the plan easy to update

A single clear sketch with bed sizes, planting dates and observations is often more useful than a complicated chart that is never maintained. Try planning one bed in detail for a season. Record what actually worked, then use that evidence to improve the following year's arrangement.

Keep the advice in context

These practical recommendations follow the German Gartenjahr guide. They are not fixed dates or guarantees: climate, soil, plant variety and local weather conditions all affect the best decision. Check original plant information and your own growing conditions before acting.
