Choosing green manure for empty garden beds
A cover crop can protect bare soil, but choice depends on sowing season, crop rotation and the following vegetable crop.
Decide what the bed needs
Green manure is not one universal seed mix. An empty bed may benefit from living cover, root growth, organic matter or simply protection against erosion. Assess whether the next vegetable needs to be planted soon and whether the current season leaves enough time for a cover crop to establish. Also examine drainage, compaction and previous crop health. A living cover cannot fix a severely unsuitable soil structure overnight.
Match the plant family to rotation
Mustards and radishes are brassicas, so they may be a poor fit before or after certain cabbage crops where crop-rotation concerns exist. Legumes belong to another family and have different requirements. Some cover crops tolerate cool weather better than others, while frost-killed species leave residues on the soil surface. Read the mix composition rather than assuming every packet is suitable for every vegetable bed.
Avoid sowing too late or too thickly
Check recommended sowing depth, coverage rate and temperature for the selected species. A dense cover may compete for water and light, whereas a sparse late sowing may establish poorly. The aim is to create appropriate cover without producing difficult-to-manage growth. Leave clear access paths and consider whether nearby perennial plants could be affected by shade or climbing cover crops.
Plan what happens before the next crop
Know how and when the cover crop will be terminated. Some can be cut and left as mulch; others may need removal or incorporation depending on the system. Allow appropriate time for residues to decompose before sowing small sensitive seeds. Avoid letting unwanted species set seed. A simple note on sowing date, performance and the following crop makes green manure genuinely useful in the rotation plan.
Before you begin: three practical checks
- Check the previous and next crop family
- Choose a season-appropriate species
- Plan cover-crop removal before sowing the next crop
