Plant spring-flowering bulbs in autumn
Autumn planting prepares the display of spring-flowering bulbs. Success depends on the bulb species, planting site and drainage, not a single calendar date.
Start with healthy bulbs
Choose firm bulbs without obvious rot, major soft areas or damage. Keep the species or variety label until the planting positions are recorded. A bargain assortment is not automatically good value if the bulbs are damaged or unsuitable for the site.
Match species to site and season
Different spring bulbs have different planting windows and depth requirements. Daffodils and many other early bloomers can be planted earlier in autumn, while tulips are commonly planted later. Use the guidance for each particular species as a starting point and adapt it to local ground conditions. Do not force a universal planting depth on every bulb.
Give roots a well-drained start
Bulbs should not remain in persistently waterlogged soil. Where ground is heavy or poorly drained, improve the planting position rather than placing bulbs in a hole that collects water. Plant at the appropriate spacing; grouping a few bulbs often creates a more natural-looking display than widely separated single flowers.
Plan the flowering sequence
Combine bulbs that bloom at different times if you want colour beyond one short peak. Mark their locations so later planting or digging does not accidentally damage them. Record the colours, approximate bloom period and variety names; those notes are useful when deciding what to add next year.
Think beyond the flowers
If pollinators are part of the goal, favour flower forms with accessible pollen and nectar where suitable. Highly doubled blooms may be less accessible than simple flowers. Plant only species appropriate for the intended setting, and allow foliage to complete its normal growth cycle after blooming rather than removing all green leaves too soon.
Keep the advice in context
These practical recommendations follow the German Gartenjahr guide. They are not fixed dates or guarantees: climate, soil, plant variety and local weather conditions all affect the best decision. Check original plant information and your own growing conditions before acting.
