PRACTICAL GARDEN GUIDE

Planting garlic cloves in autumn

Autumn-planted garlic can establish roots before winter, provided the site drains freely and the planting material is sound.

Select suitable garlic material

Use healthy planting cloves suited to the region rather than assuming any shop-bought bulb is ideal. Separate the cloves shortly before planting and keep their protective skins largely intact. Discard pieces that are soft, damaged or mouldy. The largest cloves of a suitable bulb may establish strongly, but the final crop still depends on conditions and correct care.

Choose a freely draining bed

Garlic dislikes prolonged waterlogging. Prepare the site by removing perennial weeds and improving poor soil structure as appropriate. Avoid planting in an area where water stands after rain. Follow local recommendations and the supplier's guidance for planting depth and distance, placing each clove with its pointed end upwards. Label the row clearly, because little may be visible above ground during winter.

Plan for winter and spring

Autumn planting aims to build a root system before prolonged cold. Green shoots may appear at different times depending on the variety and temperature. Keep the area weed-free without disturbing emerging roots. In very cold or wet regions, the best planting season can differ from milder places, and spring planting may be preferable for some situations. Observe the bed rather than expecting uniform growth through winter.

Manage the crop without overfeeding

Garlic needs sufficient light and moisture during active growth, but damp stagnant soil can encourage rot. Avoid large late applications of nitrogen that may favour leafy growth at the expense of bulb development. As harvest approaches, check actual plant condition and the variety's expected maturity signs. Cure and store harvested bulbs only when they are sound and suitably dry.

Before you begin: three practical checks

  • Inspect every clove before planting
  • Use a well-drained planting site
  • Label varieties and planting date
